On Wednesday June 8th the Renegades Pitch for Kids Shoot out took place at Casperkill Golf Club in Poughkeepsie, NY. Over 30 foursomes teed off expecting to have a different type of golf tournament, as a hole. (Pardon the pun.)
Rick Zolzer, the department head for the Pitch for Kids foundation worked tirelessly with his staff to bring this event as one of the top golf tournaments of the season. The Zolz always brings a great time to help a great cause. The Shoot Out is different than most tournaments mostly because of all the fun holes dispersed throughout the course and refreshments around every corner. The fun doesn't stop when the golf is over. A raffle and auction held after dinner added to the excitement.
Special holes included 10 and 14. At hole 10 foursomes dressed up like John Daly, mullet included. Allowed to tee off from the ladies tee the golfers were able to feel like John Daly when there balls landed vicariously close to the length of a John Daly Drive. At hole 14 golfers won prizes while playing the kid’s game Honeybee Tree. Golfers got to sit down and enjoy some shade for a few minutes and everyone who played took home a prize.
The temperature was unexpectedly high, but the heat was no match for these golfers’ humor.
“We’re having fun, but we’re melting at the same time,” said Jon Begar from the Dutchess County Sheriffs foursome. “Thank god we’re not the Wicked Witch.”
K-104, one of the event sponsors, had their morning show host The Woodman knock baseballs, throw footballs and hit golf balls in this year’s tournament. “Great tournament, great fun, great cause,” he said.
“The radio guys always come through,” said Renegades interviewer Jacob Wilkins.
Manhattan Beer Distributors’ Mike Zammiello has come to the Shoot Out for the past three years. He’s a big fan of the charity aspect of it.
“We like to give back to the community. However way we can help out,” he said.
After 19 holes of golf, our auction kept the competition rolling. The prizes ranged from a golf ball autographed by Adam Sandler to a slice of Mickey Mantle’s retired number brick. As golfers competed to outbid each other for their prize, one shouted to remind us all “it’s for the kids!”
On top of the auction, golfers had a raffle for prizes from a s’mores maker to a 32” Samsung television. A 50-50 was done as well which resulted with a $300 cash prize to one of the golfers.
Thank you to all those who came out and supported the tournament. If you didn’t get a chance to experience the Renegades flavored golf shoot out this year then bring your friends, family and everything in between for our next event, the WPDH Open on October 5th. Another WPDH Open on May 16th will be held at Casperkill Golf Club next year as well. Want a sneak peek to next year’s event? Surf and turf steak and lobster dinner.
