1. You don’t have to run 3.1 miles before the race: Many people, especially young, inexperienced runners will try to run the same distance as the race in the days leading up to the event. This isn’t the best way to physically prepare your body. To ensure you can complete a 5K run without injuring yourself, simply train hard enough that you can run or walk for up to thirty minutes and you should be fine.
2. Run outside: Since the race will be outside, it would be smart to start training outside. This is more beneficial than just running on a treadmill because when you run outside, you are working out more muscles. This will help your body adjust to the elements and give you confidence in running outdoors.
4. Make sure you have proper running shoes: This piece of advice is a must to properly protect your body. Your best bet is to go to a running store and get your feet analyzed so you can buy shoes that fit your foot comfortably. If you don’t have the right shoes, you will have a hard time finishing the 5K. It also never hurts to have a pair of sweet looking shoes on.
5. Don’t worry about walking: It is perfectly fine to walk during a 5K. Many runners don’t want to stop at all because they may look weak, but there is absolutely no shame in walking as it might actually help you out. Stopping to walk about halfway through the race will help prevent your muscles from becoming fatigued, which is what happens to a lot of runners near the end of a long race.
If you consider following these tips, you will definitely be set up for success once the race begins. Getting your body into shape, eating and wearing the right things are all equally important.
