There are the big name in NBA 3 Point Shootou t like Larry Bird and Craig Hodges (who took three straight three point titles, and Jason Kapono (who along with Hodges holds the record for most points in a shootout. But Jason Luksis? He may not be a household name yet, but he is a legend when it comes to Pitch for Kids 3 Point Shot titles (Back to Back to Back champion and scoring 38 points in his most recent championship).
I tried to get in this 3 point machines head.
In High School Jason played two years of varsity ball for the John Jay Patriots under Coach Ernie Verdis. In his senior campaign he was a captain and lead the team to their first league championship in 12 years while averaging 20 points a game, as well as leading the section in 3 point field goals with 70. After High School, Jason played briefly at Springfield college for his freshman year and then moved on to play at Dutchess Community College.. In his first game at Dutchess, he had 27 points shooting 7 for 7 from the 3 point line. But his playing days at Dutchess didn't last long after suffering tears to his ACL, MCL, and meniscus after seven games.
While these injuries might have devastated most athletes, not to Jason. Only a few months after having the surgery to repair his knee he competed in and won our Pitch For Kids 3-point shot contest, his first tile.
Jason obviously has the experience prior to his 3 Point Shot championships, but his experience in the event some superstitions might have had a part in making him a perennial winner.
"To get ready for the competition I try to stay in shape and put up as many shots as I can leading up to the day of the competition. Most people don’t realize how tiring it really is to shoot 25 shots in a short period of time from that distance. By the time I reach the last rack I start to lose my legs and get quite winded," he said on his preparation.
As far as superstition goes, he continues to wear the same white under shirt in games and 3 point competitions. According the Jason, "It really is a disgusting shirt that has now changed color from white to off white and now slightly yellowing."
Despite, his shirt getting worn down, don't expect Jason to, he welcomes any challengers."Like George S. Patton said, 'Accept challengers, so that you may feel the exhilaration of victory.' I will see you all on March 13th at Arlington High School. Just Bring It!"
