Wiffleball has become a national backyard phenomenon but there are other variations of the game that try to build off its success.
While it is not known nationally, or even past my small group of friends, I think Duct tape ball can easily catch on. It has the same rules as Wiffle ball but you duct tape everything; the baseball, the bat, the strike zone. It is a great use of one of man’s greatest invention.
So why duct tape? Isn’t Wiffle ball just awesome alone?
Yes, but Duct tape ball is more realistic to actually baseball. By duct taping the ball you can pitch it faster and more accurately. By Duct taping the bat you can get a little extra power, and the taped ball flies off the barrel. It is basically Wiffle on steroids.
We basically created this game because we don’t have the finesse to throw a regular ball and we love losing balls like crazy in the woods after we hit bombs.
The other game I’d like to discuss is junk ball.
Junk ball seems like a great concept that allows pitchers to throw some serious off-speed breaking pitches like the major leaguers do. To get a feel for the game, I decided to buy it at Olympia Sports (shameless plug for the company I work for).
I took it out back and tried all the pitches it gave instructions for and it worked pretty well once I got a feel for it. Then I had my brother step up to the plate and try to get a hit off me. First pitch, he gets some good wood (um I mean plastic) on it and that was the end of the game. The red piece that controls what pitches you would like to throw broke off. I was pretty disappointed.
Don’t let this experience ruin your attempts with junk ball because I have read some pretty good reviews.
